Lifting Technique for Manual Handling

Avoid such chores as much as possible in the workplace unless it’s of absolute necessity. Where it is not practicable to avoid handling a load, employers must consider the risks of the activity and implement reasonable health and safety measures to prevent and avoid injury. So here are some steps to consider:

  • Remove any obstacles from the pathway beforehand.
  • Plan on changing grip halfway during a long lift by resting the load on a table or bench.
  • Maintain a close grip on the burden. While lifting, the burden should be as near the body as feasible.
  • Maintain the heaviest side of the load closest to the body.
  • Maintain balance by adopting a firm position and keeping your feet apart, with one leg slightly forward.

Adopt a steady stance. Keep your feet apart and one leg slightly forward (alongside the load, if it is on the ground) to maintain balance. Be prepared to move your feet during the lift to maintain your stability. Avoid wearing restrictive clothing or inappropriate workplace footwear, which can make your task far more complex.

Begin with a good posture. Slight bending of the back, hips, and knees at the commencement of the lift is better than totally flexing the back (stooping) or entirely flexing the hips and knees (squatting).

While lifting, do not stretch your back any further. This can happen if the legs begin to straighten before the load is raised.
